My truck has met with some unfortunate luck and the rear axle doesn't point the right way anymore. Can I unlock my front hubs and put the rear axle on a car dolly, or do I have to put it on a flat bed?

You're fine. Just unlock the hubs and double check that the transfer case is in neutral.

If you are really concerned (although I'm not quite sure about what), take the extra 1/2 hour and drop the front drive shaft.
