For what it's worth the new HF Icon series holds up well with top brands that are much more expensive. All have lifetime warranty. So why pay double if youre warranty is lifetime?

My big gripe about the Icon stuff is that you can't buy stuff like wrenches individually. So if your idiot buddy or coworker loses one, you're out of luck.

I have bought stuff from harbor freight over the years ever since they became a hardware store, some of their stuff is junk but some of their stuff is really good and comes with a lifetime warranty. I bought ball joints separators from them and broke them within a couple of uses took them back traded them in on their lifetime warranty no questions asked, the Hercules line of rechargeable seems to be pretty good.
I have a Craftsman timing light my Dad bought me probably 40 years ago and it still works but I think it's having problems and it's not the dial back type, I've never owned one so I'd like to buy one and I'm not sure which brand would be good? Do I want to digital one with a tachometer etc?

The Pawn Shops around here usually have table with a bin on it that has various stuff in it, including wrenches.
I've bought quite a few 13/16 ones over the years from my Dirt Bike buddies borrowing spark plug wrenches.
And 1/2, 9/16 and 10mm.

Guess then you tell that buddy, you lose it you buy me a new set. I got a rule at the shop, you can borrow my tool 3 times then you got to buy your own. Had guys just keep trying to borrow tools because they dont want to buy them. That rule fixed that. Lol

I understand the damper ring does slip over time I experienced that with the Pontiac 455 many years ago.
What should the timing be set on this 1978 454?
The trucks a 1980 k35 with the standard transmission.

Honestly I wouldn't time it at idle,I'd time it for what the engine liked and let idle be whatever it ends up First no matter how you time it you need to makes sure vacuum and centrifugal advance are working and not sticking. Most but not all engines like around 36* total timing. Total is with vac advance disconnected and plugged, rev the engine until the distributor quits advancing then set your dial back at 36* twist the distributor to line up your TDC mark then lock down the distributor,hook up vacuum advance go for a test drive,no ping call it okay.Still not my preferred method set it for 30* total,find 2 land marks far enough apart to get you up around 60 mph from a dead stop. Run it at 30* again at 32*-34*-36* -38* you are looking for highest mph with the lowest degrees of timing and no ping. That's as good as you'll get it without a dyno. Trap speed is going to come up level off then drop. You want the lowest timing that got best mph. Other people's stuff I set it 32*-34*

That was my rule in the shop. I had a clipboard and wrote down what you borrowed and the date. Crossed it off when returned. After 3rd time sorry can't borrow it, should have bought one.

I used to have a guy always asking to borrow an adjustable wrench. I was at a garage sale and found this really old adjustable wrench. When he asked to borrow my adjustable he said "WTF is this?". "That is my loaner adjustable". Never borrowed it again.

I have a few timing lights. Craftsman, some off brand one and a Snap-On one with advance. The Craftsman and off brand one were bought in the 70s and the Snap-On one in the mid 80s. All still work. Check eBay, marketplace, etc. You can probably buy a good unit for what a Horror Freight POS costs.
