Thinking about streamlining my tools.

I'd open it up and to charge the battery banks directly,or wire them to a charged battery of sufficient voltage to put a charge in them. Sometimes if the battery bank falls below a given voltage,the BMS won't recognize it,and the charger will not charge it. I've revived lots of brand new LiOn batteries that went too dead at the stores or warehouses.

I tested both legs of the battery (has two 40 V packs that are either run in series or parallel, depending on the tool they are connected to and they both read about 37 V. The battery life indicator on the front is still showing three out of four bars.

I am eventually going to open it up and try to see if there’s something obvious on the BMS PCB.

(Sigh) my name is James, and I have a problem. So, I sold a pistol a week or so ago, and as one does with a bit of extra money, I set to trying to decide how to spend it. Because saving is for suckers. Anyway, I’ve decided to replace my perfectly good Kobalt stuff with Dewalt. Why? Absolutely no good reason other than the fact that I use my dewalt impact driver and drill all the time. I’ve never used my kobalt driver, and rarely use the drill. My oscillator tool is also a dewalt XR, and it is by far the best one out of the couple that I have. So the ergonomics are great. The dewalt spotlight that I sold was also much better than the kobalt that I replaced it with. So the ergonomics are just better. (For me).

I found a new in box grinder on marketplace and got it for $100. I sold my kobalt spotlight to a guy that’s interested in the rest of my lineup. So I’m hoping that works out. The grinder, in my opinion, it’s better thought out than the kobalt. The switch feels better. The guard has a cutoff wheel attachment, instead of two separate guards like the kobalt. And it’s just more user friendly.

So going forward my new kobalt stuff will be sold and replaced with dewalt. Yea, I should have just done that to begin with. But, I did learn to not get the bottom tier dewalt, but to step up to the brushless line at least, and try for the XR line if possible. So there’s your lesson for the week. My wife is gonna be pissed……

I picked up a sawzall today, and Lowe’s had a 2 pack of 4 Ah batteries on sale for $80 so I grabbed one. Home Depot has the spotlight on sale for $80, down from $120. Got my eye on that one next. Jeez I sound like an addict.

I've been replacing corded stuff most of it is being phased out or has already been discontinued. Never liked most of the early battery powered stuff I used a lot of it because work would buy whatever was on sale at the time.

I'm a drill/driver and ratchet away from having all the same battery. When my corded metal circular saw dies (they discontinued it and only make a battery version now) I'm not looking forward to the $500 to replace it, but at least I'll have a half dozen 5Ah M18 batteries by that point. All brushless variable speed no complaints so far and the rapid stop on the grinder is awesome.

I blame a Milwaukee set for getting the wheels turning on this. I saw a set on marketplace (probably stolen, lost receipt and all) for $500 still in box. It retails locally for over $800. But after looking closer, I noticed everything was brushed motors. That made me start crunching numbers, and I realized with some careful planning I could make this work with dewalt stuff since I already had a few pieces.

I am a little hesitant to replace my 1/2” impact, as dewalt has so many different models. I just want to end up with one with equal power to what I have.

Spotlight acquired….. again. Been researching their impacts, and even though there is a new in box compact one near me for a good price, think I’ll hold out for the mid sized one. It has similar specs to the one I have now. Probably gonna pick up one or two more work lights also. I have several, but I like lights for some reason lol.

I know I’ve mentioned longevity and store support for kobalt as some of my concerns. I found out earlier this week that Lowe’s will no longer be carrying the Flex brand of power tools, due to some issues with sales. So, while I do think Kobalt is a good brand and has nice stuff, it is a house brand at the end of the day, and Lowe’s may decide to pull the plug at some point. I’m confident that Dewalt will be around for a long time, and their tools are available at stores all over the place including local mom and pop places.
This has been an interesting and completely unnecessary experience, but I figured I would share it for anyone else who might be researching what tool line to get into. Let’s face it, some of this stuff is expensive, and you want to make sure you’re getting the right stuff the first time around.

Thats the same impact i have lol

It’s been a good one for sure. But impact technology has improved, and the dewalt I bought yesterday is 2/3’s the size of this one with similar specs.
