The " Starter "

I am rebuilding an 84 and have come to a starter problem ! the engine that I had before was a 6 cyl. I have rebuilt an 8 cyl. I put all wires back where they belong and when I turn the key to the on position the starter engages instead of me turning the key switch all the way like normal. Any Ideas ? Key switch maybe ??

You sure you got those wires on right? The purple wire is the signal wire from the key switch, that should be by itself and the 2 red wires on the other post.
