Stereo popping

I seem to have a stereo that doesn't like volume. It's a panisonic , nothing fancy , no amps or big speakers. I can turn the volume up to 24 which is just under half volume. One click more and it starts popping in and out. One click down and it's fine again. Does this whether it's running or not. Any suggestions would help.

What was it?

I have an Alpine head unit that is acting the same way. Output is fine up till just over half volume and then it trips out/comes back/trips out until I drop the volume down under half. Then it's fine again.

Was it shorted speaker leads or reversed polarity?

It was cheap speaker wire and bad ground. Put in heavier gauge wire. It seems to be fine now.
