Steering column removal

Looking for a bit of advice. I am looking to remove the steering column. Before I start pulling on the connections any advice on how to disconnect. Just trying to NOT break the connections.

The 2 connectors pictured there - turn signal switch & what looks like a wiper switch, but yours is an 81 - ?? will come apart when you push on that black tab and push them apart.

The 2 connectors for the ignition switch IIRC have a metal strip that holds them down - you can just pry that up slightly and lift them out.

If equipped, the cruise plug just , well - plugs in. LOL

You probably also have a reverse light/neutral safety switch at the bottom of the column closest to the firewall.

Thanks Goldie...I have it 90% removed. got the 2 smaller plugs that are on top of the column to undo. I wanted to take some pics for reference so I had to stop and grab phone....

Those ones on top, you have to squeeze a couple tabs to remove the plugs. And one is easier to be removed before the other, but I never remember which one until I try it.

so I am trying to figure out how to replace the floor seal for the steering column,,,auto column. Do I need to dismantle some of the bottom end to get the new seal around the column?

anyone replaced the steering column floor seal on an automatic steering column?

Do you mean the seal where the firewall flange attaches to the column? I have not... I honestly didn't even realize there was a seal there. For the flange to firewall seal, you can use strip caulk, foam tape seal or something along those lines.

I do not recall ever replacing one. However, one you pull the t!ts from the steel plates I would think there is enough flexibility there to pull it on the PS around the bearing and steering shaft and then around the shift lever.

Maybe that is not the case - if not, I'd try cutting it and silicone it back together.

Actually, if you can remove the lower bearing maybe that would give you more wiggle room.

Thanks. Really don't want to take column apart. Will probably clean off the seal and use putty tape or foam tape.

Ken, you mean the seal on the plate that connects to firewall? At end of column?

Yup.
Just not gonna tear into bottom of column.
