Sounds like your neutral safety switch is out of adjustment, or is worn out to the point where there are metal shavings inside, making contact throughout the gear range.

i bypass the neutral safty switch in my manual tranny trucks
i have used the starter to move my trucks short distances when they broke down and to start out when i had clutch problems.

and i have it bypassed on a couple of my auto trucks as well it quit working in my 71 i had to bypass it.

its not a big deal as long as you are aware of it and have a good head on your shoulders

It's been bypassed in my '79 too. Really, the safety switch isn't needed if you know how to drive, IMHO. I put a floor shifter in the Burb, so there's no functioning safety switch and there's not even a gear indicator... even my wife can drive that thing everyday without any trouble at all.
