That’s a cable driven speedo. Unscrew the cable, make sure the plastic gear inside turns when spinning the driveshaft. If not, most likely one of the gears has stripped. If it has stripped, don’t replace it until you have inspected the cable. If it’s tight and hard to turn, either lube it or replace it. The gears are different colors, with different tooth counts to calibrate the speedo.

That last part I did understand, with the color coordinated drive and driven gears to calibrate the speedo based on tire size and gear ratio.

Maybe today, assuming it won't be raining, and after I mow the damn grass (lol @bucket ), I'll take a look at it, see what's going on.

Do you have a recommendation for who to buy the driven and driven gears from @Matt69olds

I know most speedo gears are available from TCI. Visit all your local transmission shops, Whatever It Takes (WIT) transmission, hopefully one of my suggestions works out for you

By chance, do you happen to see one of these behind your speedometer?

That's just a regular ol speedo cable, with a drive and driven gear in the tailhousing. The VSS mounts to the back of the cluster and has an optical sensor of sorts that reads off of the speedo. Most 80's GM vehicles used the same setup, before electric speedos were phased in.
sounds like a simple speedometer cable setup but with more steps

Until electrical speed sensors were used across the entire production line, it was cheaper to add a speed sensor to the existing speedo head. Once speed sensors and electronic cruise control become common was it cost effective to change everything.

Unless it benefits the bean counters, nothing changes unless absolutely necessary!

Found my issue.
Broken half piece cable.

also learned evidently this 89 has a 2 piece speedo cable.

I have a 4x4 cable, should work tho?

Dunno for sure, but if ya got it, try it. As long as it screws in I can't see you doing any harm.

Tried a 4x4 suburban speedo first, no issues, but the sheathing had cracks, so it was binding the speedo... Causing it to jump up and down when accelerating.
Took the speedo cable off the k5, which had no damage, speedo works great now!

Locks up in 4th as well
