I just got my truck back from the mechanic. He installed a 700R4 tranny in it and had to convert it for my mechanical gauges since it was set up for digital. It worked fine all the way home (160 miles) but now it has mysteriously stopped working. This mechanic is good so I am suspecting a bad speedo cable. Any ideas?

Take loose the speedo cable from the trans and chuck the end of it in a cordless drill and run the drill (slowly) in reverse. Have someone watch the speedo if you cant see it and see if it's working. If not the cable broke at the speedo, if so there may be something wrong with the speedo gear in the trans.
