I started my truck to move it today and hit the wiper control on my turn signal switch and a few seconds after that a little smoke started coming out from behind the switch in the column. I've had the ground under the bed off for a while so I clamped it to a raw spot on the frame and the smoke seemed to go away. Would the ground have anything to do with this? not to worried as it's not in driving order, but if I walk away from it while running I don't want to burn my interior out...

Yes it would, since the brake lights are also tied into the turn signal switch.
