Hey everyone, I've got some questions about removing the monster on my engine. It's very ugly and isn't welcome in my state or my truck. Can anyone give me ideas on the important issues in the removal of the nasty smog monster that has me P0ed that I bought this truck? It's gotta go. It makes the easiest repair a pain. (Thermostat replacement) !

By ‘86 there were quite a few emissions controls, including the possibility of electric controls on the Quadrajet and maybe ESc spark control. It will not be simple.

If yours is like my '86 was, you actually have two smog pumps. One for each cylinder bank. You can remove both of them, along with all associated hoses. You will need to cap of the injection tubes on the exhaust manifolds, as well as run a shorter alternator belt.

Ya, this. please do this, some people like to have their emission system fully functional, and in some areas that stuff is required to license the truck and some of that parts are made of unobtainium.

Mine had the stainless manifolds, but the tube nuts didn't want to come out. I simply pinched off the hose nipple on the "mufflers". I didn't care about show quality looks, I just wanted room to service the dang thing.

Yes, definitely save the parts you remove! I had my original parts kicking around in a box for several years, but I could never bring myself to pitch them. Good thing, because I wound up coming across a nice fella in Colorado that needed those parts so his truck could pass smog inspection. I was very happy to send them his way.

Had a shop do my 1985 K20 4x4. No big deal to the them.Removed the smog pumps, hoses and plugged the engine and i took that nasty converter off.Really cleaned up and simplified my 350 motor. In my mind i want to say it runs better but other folks will say it does not make a difference. In MD. i had to register it as a 1 ton farm vehicle to be exempt from emissions.

A buddy of mine de-smogged his 454 and used Cummins oil drain plugs to plug the headers. That was a pretty expensive way of doing it lol

Ditch the stock manifolds for headers and 2.5 in exhaust. Will run much better.

That's very true. Many many dyno sessions have proven that long tube headers increase power a good bit on even a stock 454, including low and mid range. Popular belief says that long tube headers only make power at high rpm, but that is simply not true.

That is correct. Part of the EPA's effort to try to force us to replace our vehicles with computerized Japanese cars.
