The fuel filter has a restrictor in it. Use an Adel clamp and a block off plate to mount the filter where the fuel pump was. This will give you an inlet an outlet and a return, all in the right location. The filter will bypass excess fuel back to the tank when the carburetor needle shuts. If the carburetor needle won't stay shut due to excess pressure enlarge the restrictor.Your going to run the vacuum advance to manifold vacuum without a check valve

I'd be checking to see if the fuel pump pushrod is moving up and down, that the pump is good, and that there is no blockage in the tank sock or fuel line before I would even think about a noisy expensive electric fuel pump.

I agree. Someone please tell this man how far the push rod should move when he tests the cam lobe.

If you must use an electric fuel pump, buy a spare. You'll need it.

Unless I’ve gotten three bad fuel pumps in a row, I can’t find anybody that has an alternate explanation.

We are not going to play this game again. Check pushrod movement. Go back and count last weekend how many times I told you to check pump pressure and volume and everytime you said couldn't be the problem. You finally tested,Ta Da we found a problem, now check pushrod movement.I don't tell you check this and that to waste your time,I say it to save us both time.

After all the tests are done, and assuming you are right, I assume the only fix is a new cam or an electric fuel pump?

Did you do the push rod test?

I read through this whole thread again to see if the fuel pump brand was quoted, I did not see or I missed it.

YES.... 3 bad fuel pumps if you were buying Airtex brand or also some other brands.

We are not going to play this game again. Check pushrod movement.

Richard, how far should the push rod move, I don't remember?

Spec. is .340 but it always so obvious a real measurement isn't needed just push the pushrod up with your index finger and feel for movement, barely any? Lobes worn off. None pushrod is stuck probably from too long a bolt in the front of the block. But until he tests we know nothing.

Removed hard fuel line from fuel pump. Removed fuel pump. Made a homemade remote starter switch from an old dwell meter & a 20amp button i had.

With ignition switch off, cranked engine.

It’s difficult for me to measure accurately, but feels like maybe 1/2 inch-ish.

Close to 1/2 inch.I no longer suspect the lobe. Damnit. Fabricate a fuel hose for the pump inlet to a fuel can see what kind of fuel volume you get then.

Do you mean, bypass the gas tank, in-line fuel filter & fuel lines, & draw fuel directly from a gas can into the pump?

i’m guessing you’re suspecting a fuel line blockage?

Ok…

I’ll try that.

The 2 hard fuel lines happen to be the ONLY thing that hasn’t been replaced or rebuilt.

Is there a way to even install the fuel pump and completely miss the rod?

I have A fuel line directly from a gas can into the pump.

I have a fuel line directly from the steel line (disconnected from the carburetor).

zero pressure and zero fuel.

No leaks…

i’m beginning to think I’m simply incompetent.

Yes, it is very possible to do. The best way to install the pump is by removing the bolt in the front of the block that is in-line with the fuel pump rod bore. You can then thread in a longer 3/8 bolt that will hold the push-rod in place while you hold the push rod tight against the cam lobe. Once the bolt is tight against the pushrod, it will hold it in place while you install the pump. Once the pump is in place, you can then remove the long bolt and install a short bolt to plug the hole.

If you do all of that and then still aren't getting any pressure.... you likely have a 3rd bad pump. Maybe on top of the real initial problem(restriction in the fuel supply line could have maybe trashed these pumps).
