So got into a little debate with a coworker. If you have a rear end with a ring gear set, spider gears and everything are ******. As long as your pinion does not come out, will installing a new gear set, same ratio, mess up your backlash? Given the pinion is un-damaged etc etc. thanks for helping settle this.

Are you just changing spider gears? if so no you dont need to pull the chuck.but if you are trying to change just the rung gear. you cant do that. ring and pinion are matched set.

If the ring gear is the same ratio, more specifically the same tooth count and tooth angle (as in same model # by a specific manufacturer) you can swap it in but you'll still have to set backlash, end play and tooth pattern since the pinion will be worn.
