Doorman or someone probably has A.I.R. delete manifolds or you could do as you describe. The trick is getting the fittings out cleanly. Kroil, heat, Kroil some more; it's never a fun job. Why not just use headers?

Some people just cut them off pinch them shut fold the pinch, pinch that again. I'd probably cut the tubes and see if I could tap the inside for bolts and just screw bolts in or braze them in. I heard the fitting if you can get it out is the same size and thread as I believe it was a jeep oil drain plug.

Available in all tube sizes, in steel or brass. Small ones are at every exhaust port in the early engines. Large ones at the back are metric. The right answer is tube headers and dual exhaust system.

Considering what brass plugs run, it's not a whole lot more to just do headers and get the improvements.

I did that job many years ago (1971?) on a Ford 428. We unscrewed the fittings and cut them off the lines. Then I found small ball bearings that just fit into the tapered seat on the fitting. Dropped the ball bearing down into the hole in the manifold, and then tightened the old fitting down on top of it to close off the hole.
