I'm gonna go ahead and put this out there....
Properly lubricating the hood hinges and latches will go a LONG WAY towards preventing hood bending. Dad would spray those parts with white lithium grease periodically. Same with the door hinges/latches. We never had a hood bend on our squares(and we had 8!) from the hinges sticking. Only bent hoods were when we got hit.....

I watched that happen on live TV, it was crazy to see. Alot of guys build these trucks and make the engine bays all nice and pretty and then don't want to lube the hinges cuz it'll make a mess. We've had that happen a handful of times with customers, they'll order a hood and/or hinges, call back a few month-a year later when the hood bends. I always ask for pictures first, specifically closeups of the hinges, they're always bone dry. And then the excuses start "I didn't want stuff dripping down in my nice engine bay" and I have to explain it to them that you have to make sacrifices if you're gonna use OE hinges.

You dont have to have it soaked to where it drips down all over everything. Use lithium grease or axle grease if they are that worried. But a least enough to not be bone dry. You can hear it if it is dry.

Yep, that's what I had to explain to all of them. I always hold a rag under our work truck's hinges, douse it good and catch the drippings. Then do a gentle wipe of the outside surfaces and she's good

I don't put oil in my engine because I don't want oil seepage on my freshly painted engine.

Lol. That's what that auction truck makes me think of.

Here is what I did on mine. I fabricated my own angle iron brackets on the sides and found 1/4 steel and cut to size and drilled holes to match the premanufactured holes in place. If you look real closely I added steel tubing into the centred indents for added stability. Plus I sprayed white grease on the hinges for peace of mind. This is on my 80' GMC Suburban that has the heavy hood.

ROOM ELEPHANT:

First, there is the matter of the hood being a one in a million chance thing, give or take a few thousand accidents (tree fights, head-ons, rear-ends).

Second, what is the difference between a 73 through 80 pickup and all others with regard to danger from hoods?

All that aside, I'm surprised someone hasn't made V shaped iron ("sharp end up) with ends and posts to mount down through hoods for those who aren't purists. Once mounted, they could be painted to match, or some might like them another trim color, or even chrome, people like those who customize interiors, put different tires on, swap engines for hotter, prettier ones. . . .

Oiling is good, but life is real. Not everyone is aware of the poor engineering solution. And if you space lubrication, or those before you did. . . .

Those pins in back could be modified to be enough to force the hood to bend, even with bracing.

They have pins factory, that serve this purpose, the factory made them hidden. They grab the bottom of the hood by the cowl. But I have to be honest,I took the springs off my 75 hood,it already had a small bend when I got it,it's a heavy SOB,but it the bend won't get bigger.

Yep. That's why I referred to them. If they aren't enough to do the trick stock, the holes could be beefed up, so the hood was forced to crumple, even with bracing.

Sorry didn't read that bottom line correctly. Thought you were talking about adding pins.
