rear diff fluid color

Ive been having problems with my rear end lately so I pulled the cover and this was the color of the fluid. Also the drain magnet was 1/8 think with gunk/metal particles. This fluid has like 3000 miles on it. Something is clearing wrong here

Remember water mixes with oil and eventually makes acid hints the reason why things look so clean...

Well something leaked somewhere. Or you didn't change out the oil after the seals.

Where is your breather vent mounted? It could be getting water splashed into it.

My '79 was getting water in the diff when it rained and the truck was parked. The bed floor was cut for a goosneck ball setup, water would drip off the underside of the bed floor, and onto the frame. Then the water would run off the edge of the frame and drip off the inner "C" area of the frame, right where the breather was mounted. It was just a trickle, but it turned the fluid milky.

What's the fluid capacity on your axle? if that's a normal size drain pan, that looks a little over filled, like some water got in somewhere.

Gotta say water is the first thing that came to mind when I saw that pic as well. And water does a pretty ****** job of lubricating things.

Yep, water got in somehow. Either thru the axle seals or the vent. The vent hose is supposed to be bolted to the bottom side of the bed with a 1 way check valve on it. That lets air out, but nothing else in. I'd check it.

As far as your rear end problems, see a proctologist.

Rear diff to firewall is far too long. You want a short run for your vent lines so they can breathe quickly.

And a proctologist .. well he puts a rubber glove on and inspects your rear differential.
