puzzled on no start

1986 truck all original 305 engine and carb. purchased a rebuilt carb and put on engine about a year ago and cranked and ran fine. let it sit about 6 months and got no start---unless i poured gas in carb. took carb off and found rebuilder did not put spring/clip on float so i put one on it and reinstalled. engine started, was a little flooded, but cleared up quickly and ran fine. next day started fine. let it sit a week and now no start-----won't start even by pouring gas in carb. it does show to have spark....really puzzled now!!

Badly fouled plugs will cause a no start especially in cold weather.

Old gas, carburetor "jelly", fouled plugs, corroded terminals on cap. Start with the basics.

Have checked those things out. Most puzzled as it won’t run, at least for a few seconds, when pour gas in carb Using spark tester shows plugs firing. Was running fine a week ago.

Leaving the clip off isn't a problem it is actually a common trick to prevent a different problem. Pull some spark plugs and look at them. Clamp an old spark plug in a jumper cable,open the gap up to about .090 ground the other end of the jumper cable,attach a plug wire and crank see if you have spark, remember open the gap way up a healthy coil will jump at least .090

Verify it has spark before doing anything else.

Next, carefully pour some fuel into the vent tube. Wedge a screwdriver in the choke flap to hold it open, look down into the carb while you pump the throttle. You should see a solid stream of fuel out the accelerator nozzles. If not, it’s pretty clear either the carb wasn’t rebuilt correctly, or it wasn’t rebuilt with ethanol compatible parts.
