Kinda sounds like there is something slowing the air flow at highway speeds.Did you ever recurve your distributor?

No I didnt recurve it looked in to it though. Now I had my vac advance hooked up to manifold port on the edel I just switchd it to timing port it droped my idle down to 5-600 . Do I have to reset my timing on the right port or will it be the same and just advance slower

Is it possible that on the freeway with the fans on they are blocking air flow. Should they be off and free spin

All putting it on timed vacuum will do is give it a crummy idle and an off-idle throttle response lag. It won't make any difference in driving, just in idle.

They should help if running, compared to pinwheeling.

Is it a pusher or puller? Shrouded or not? SBC or BBC?

You need a bigger alternator if you can see that the fan is on by your voltage gauge. The alternator should lock in the regulator and hold voltage all the time. Low voltage to the fans will reduce the air flow by the square of the voltage drop. 10% voltage drop, that's 20% less air.

What kind of alternator is on it? How many amp? Does the alternator have the stamped steel fan on the front behind the pulley, or does it have a flat steel plate with a black epoxy turbine style fan?

Do you have a four-row radiator or a three-row radiator?

My '69 Mustang had overheating issues after I switched to a twin fan/shroud. I switched it back to the motor driven clutch fan and, after cleaning the radiator, no more issues.

Pull the radiator, fill it with 50/50 muriatic acid (found at pool supply stores) and water, let it bubble and cook for 15 minutes. Should unclog it easily.

I was once told that those fans should free spin while on the freeway and could impede airflow. Could be wrong?

While the fan is running you should be able to put a piece of paper over the front of the radiator and it'll stick.

Black plastic fan means it's a 12SI. 75 amps or better. You can get 12SI alternators and aftermarket replacements to 130 amps. I would put a 94-amp 12SI on there as a minimum. You need to keep your voltage from sagging at any rpm above idle.

When you upgrade the alternator also Do the big 3 with at least a 4 gauge wire from the alternator to the bat
