I installed these a while back along with new spring bushings, and all new ball joints etc. I added the cover for its look. The stock steel cover is actually thicker and would resist rock damage better.

I have that as well on my '78 i like having it. Got it from ORD as well.

I had those disconnects on my K5, worked great but never actually disconnected them as they keep the tire from hitting the fender.

Another problem with the thick cast cover is that they don't fit in axle trusses. 3x in my life, I've had a housing crack/ split on the long side at the rosette weld. Yes, all had larger tires and saw some off road but nothing over 35" and extreme. Since I started putting a Confer truss on every front axle, I've never had a problem again.
