Big hands... small spaces. Additionally, just the age of everything is, I'm guessing, making the process of loosening the nuts a bit more challenging.
I believe they are lock nuts, they are a pain to loosen, but they won't loosen on their own which is good

Thanks, all. A big of weight relief, a breaker bar, some bumped knuckles, a few choice words, and they're out.
