Well, I am finally getting around to putting the NP833 in my '68 C10. I never did like the wonky shifter set-up that came with the transmission, so I kept looking for another shifter and one finally did show up on flea bay a while back, so I grabbed it. You can see the shifter that came with my transmission has some homemade bracketree on it to space it out and then they made an off-set adapter to put the shift lever in the right spot. Combine that with the heavily modified shift arms, and it just made me nervous. After comparing the correct shifter with what came on the transmission, I'm pretty sure somebody modified a regular Hurst 4 speed shifter for like a M22 to work on the NP833.

I was originally looking for a 3 speed Saginaw or TH350 crossmember to use on the NP833 because I was under the impression that I had to use the bellhousing that came with the transmission. Then for the heck of it, I put the SM465 bellhousing on the NP833 and it fits like a glove. The bearing retainer is the same size as the 465 and this NP833 only has the Chevy mounting bolt patter, so it will bold right up. So I can use the original bellhousing and crossmember from the SM465. My one question is if I should be concerned with the aluminum case being strong enough without a crossmember farther back for support? I have a buddy with an older Dodge 2wd pickup that has an A833 OD transmission in it and he says it has a crossmember under the bellhousing and nothing farther back to support it. Probably ok then?

I'd clean the bellhousing good and run it. But I'd retorque the transmission to bellhousing bolt torque after a few miles.

I feel you are correct. I persnally felt a Hurst Comepition Plus shifter, which is what I used on my M21 and M22 in my 64 GMC would also work on this NP833. But it appears you're saying NO. So what if it was a Hurst Comp plus for the Dodge what do they call it, the NP440? I'd think that one should have worked for sure, just like any other 4 speed. The only deal on this transmission that's wonky, is 3rd and 4th have switched places within the transmission to make the OD. So what's done is, the 3/4 shift arm is placed on the transmission upside down, so that 3rd is in the 4th position and 4th in the 3rd position. Nuts, but it works and is genious IMO.

So your transmission is aluminum right? Yes, there is 2 different bolt patterns to the bellhousing, meaning the ears on the transmission that bolt to the transmission. My cast iron 4x4 NP OD transmission, had that odd ball bolt pattern so no, I could NOT use that bellhousing your showing there, unless you do have the one that has the dual bolt pattern. That's what I had to use, was the dual bolt pattern and not all the bell housings had it. I got lucky. I bought my trans and shifter, that was it. Then I bought an SM465 used from a guy that did an auto conversion. Thankfully, his SM465 was modern enough, and I asked, is the bell housing incuded too as soon as I seen that strange hole it, my sticker started to peck out. It was hard to hold back the excitement, but I did. I contained myself, and calmly asked, so is the bell housing included too? He says, I don't need it, I was going to scrap it, if you need it go for it, take it. BOOYA !!! so the $50 I paid for this SM465, included the hard to find bellhousing too that I had no idea he had. It was just your typcial Craigslist ad and I seen a SM465 for to cheap close by, that I didn't even need, but figured at that price and close enough, I'll go get it. Turned out to be I bought a cheap transmission and got the gold mine for FREE.

I see now that the factory shifter that I got is missing the mounting bracket. I am frustrated that I didn't think of that when I saw it on Ebay. Anyways, I am looking for that bracket. Credit to @HotRodPC for this picture from a thread quite a few years back that shows the mounting bracket. Anyone out there have one of those they would be willing to sell? I know its a long shot, but thought I would ask. If I can't locate one, I probably will try using the modified shifter setup that came on the transmission.

I've been told it is Hurst made shifters on these transmissions. There is 2 different models. 1 is rebuildable and 1 is not is my understanding. You might get with Hurst support and see they can steer you in the right direction, or maybe a Dodge forum where a varriant of this transmission was used on Dodge muscle cars. The Dodge version was not an OD ratio but the shifter mounting should be the same.

I thought that @89Suburban once mentioned that the OD version was used in the 80's Dodge trucks too.

Also here's a pic of a Saginaw with a simple aluminum plate bracket. I'd consider making something like this to mount the shifter aluminum plate to position it up down, forward or back, shim left to right with a piece of rectangular tubing.

I thought I had heard that the OD Dodge transmissions had a different tailshaft and thus a little bit different shifter mount and shift rods. I do like the idea of trying to fabricate my own bracket. Once I get the transmission into the pickup, then I can do some measuring and probably come up with something. I'm waiting on a combination u joint that I had to order but will be starting the install soon. Thanks Perry and Rick for the suggestions!

Mine was an A833 stabbed into a slant six in a late 70’s D100. The **** knob clearly showed OD for 5th.
