Need some Expertize for paint job

I've owned a 1986 Chevrolet k20 (Single Cab Long Bed) for a couple of years and would like to repaint the very terrible rattle can paint job that the previous owners put on it. My goal for painting is to close everything up hood, doors and only paint the exterior. My goal is to make her look nice for my next couple of highschool years. Can anyone give me a good idea on how much paint I would need? I don't need the job to be show worthy, just enough to look good from a distance.

Couple things to consider.
1. Another bad paint job makes it worth less than it already was. Especially to anyone who would fix it up.
2. Prep work and Body work. Unless you obliterate all the rattle can work and likely (maybe, who knows?) the paint underneath it, even if you do a good job with bodywork and painting, see #1 above.

Quantity? Single stage, 2 gallons should give you enough for a decent exterior paint job (no other big surfaces like under hood front of bed, back of cab etc. and maybe enough leftover to dust the inside of the truck bed.

Another consideration, if you’re literally just going to paint what you can see with the doors closed, it should be the same color as original, or refer to #1 above.
And at a minimum, “should” remove the little stuff like trim, door handles, mirrors, side window gaskets/felt and ideally the windshield and back window.

So the plan is to strip her down, bondo some dents, and eliminate all rust. I won't be painting the inside of the bed and instead put some Rhino Liner in there. I do plan on doing the back side of the cab and taking the door handles, all trim, and mirrors off as well. I won't remove the windows though, I plan on carefully masking those over. So will two gallons still work?

Eh it will be close.
Cheap paint I’d say no. High solids quality paint. Yes but can’t waste any and do all the exposed stuff first before the hidden stuff that you can go light on.

Guess it depends. When I did my K20, I did the interior and complete exterior, minus the inside of the bed (raptor liner ). It took one gallon of color and one gallon of clear. When doing 2 stage, you thin the paint 2-1, so you get 2 gallons of sprayable product.

Plans had changed. I traded my 86 for my fathers 1984 GMC K20 Sierra Classic. Much much better condition. Gonna raptor line the bed as well as the bottom 2-4 inches to help protect the truck from dings and dents caused by rocks. We are painting the visible parts of the interior such as the door sills along with the dash. I bought 2-gallons of restoration shop single stage Acrylic Urethane paint. Will that be enough? Also. With the primer. If I prime in and paint it within around 3 days of eachother would I still have to rough up the primer before I paint?
