I had a big old diesel battery in the truck until a couple weeks ago when it died out. I put in a reg battery and the cheap aftermarket battery hold down must have loosened up. I opened my hood and found that the wing nut had welded itself to the bolt. Fuse was in affected and the truck didn't skip a beAt. Ever see anything like this before.

factory hold down was all rusty and wouldn't move. I sprayed it with pb blaster a bunch of times and now it is holding my battery in place. Just thought that this was kind of funny

I used to drive an old '78 Chevy wrecker as a yard truck, got to bouncing around in the back of the lot one day and the battery turned sideways and put the post right up against the fender. It smoked like crazy and did actually stall by the time I got the hood open, but after moving the battery away from the fender, it fired right back up again.

I wish cell phones with cameras existed when I drove a Datsun pickup in high school. My new battery was too tall, I saw a glowing spot on the hood and was confused as ****. When it shut off it made more sense.

Back in college, I had a 67 Beetle. Like all Bugs, the battery was located under the rear seat.

One night we went to pick up a keg. Carried it out and threw it into the back - on the seat.

On the drive back to the party, things went bad.

Smelled smoke, lost all electrical power and finally the engine died. Then - as we stood outside the car looking at the engine and scratching our heads as to the cause - the back seat suddenly burst into flames.

Investigation revealed that the weight of the keg had forced the seat's coil springs down to the point that they bridged the battery terminals. The coils then became like giant toaster elements. They heated up cherry red and welded/melted into the battery posts - hence the cause of the black out and seat fire.

Luckily, the keg was unharmed. Later that evening, the beer it contained helped to ease the pain of losing my back seat. The whole incident also made for a good drinking story.

That must have smelled. Those seats were stuffed with horse hair or something.

Haha - I know exactly what you mean. That padding was strange stuff. It looked like something they found in a barn - never seen it anywhere since.
