Muffler upgrade that make stock exhaust roar with be abnoxus

Looking to make y 89 burb 5.7 with original cat over 200,000 miles stock exhaust make some sound without lots of drone inside but make notice outside been looking at the flowmaster FX ??

Flowmasters are known for drone. I had 3 different ones on different vehicles and they droned my brain out of my head at cruise speed. Search Youtube, there are many videos with sounds from different mufflers to get an idea how they sound.

The FX is a straight through design,not baffled like most flowmasters. On a single exhaust setup I look for a longer case muffler than the typical 14" case that the FX has.

Are you SURE it's the original cat?

I ask because that makes a gigantic difference in exhaust note. So if you have the original cat, the only way you are going to get any rumble at all is to replace the muffler with a straight pipe. And it will still be very civilized.

I found this out back when my buddy had his '91 K5. We replaced the original muffler with a glasspack muffler and it didn't change the sound/volume much at all. Years later I got our '88 Suburban that had the stock converter and stock 3" exhaust, but the muffler had been deleted. It sounded good. It was deep and mellow.

So if you want obnoxious sound levels, that stock converter will absolutely have to go. I'm not saying to run without a converter, just that any modern replacement converter is going to flow much better amd not reduce the sound levels nearly as much.

crappy leaky flowtech mid headers into welded together 2.5" head pipes from u/j mandrel bent pipes, into 3" merge collector, into a long round straight through stainless magnaflow muffler, then out to the stock exit, thats how my 91 v2500 350/4l80e burb's been for over a dozen years, sounds pretty good to just a bit loud when you stand on it, no drone

ill probably turn the garbage headers into wall/mailbox art in the next year or two, shitcan everything forward of the merge then build forward to some quality headers where gaskets hopefully do something more than extract foul language and ticky noises and the flanges don't impersonate tater chips

mine is about to be loud. Passenger side blowing out mufflers. Glasspacks soon and done with it. Tired of fooling with cheapo's

See if you can listen (online?) to A Corvair turbo muffler or a Chrysler Hemi muffler. These were the go-tos before things like Flowmaster became a household word, and we got sick of listening to Thrush and Cherry Bombs.

Old cat gotta go. Presume you took a rip before putting the new muffler in?
Every old car I remember as a kid with an early style pancake cat, wasn’t really loud when the muffler rusted off (not an if but a when growing up in the rust belt).
But while they weren’t very loud, they sounded horrible.
Fast forward a few decades, son just did a budget straight pipe in his 5.7 hemi pickup. Dual flow thru OE cats, straight pipe to the tailpipe. Left the OE resonator in the tail pipe.
Rumbles at idle. Fairly loud gettin on er. No drone and not too loud on the highway.
Emulating that on the old burb, replace the cat with an aftermarket one and then see what it sounds like with the muffler or whatever behind it. IMO.

I will replace the cat with a flow through design from flowmaster. But first have to fix my leaky valve seals first so not to plug the new cat!! with oil burn at start up
