Hey y'all I'm new to this forum I have a 87 V10 custom deluxe with the 700r4. I wanna switch it over to a 4 or 5 speed with a granny low. Its gonna be a daily driver and occasionally hit a mud hole and do some wheeling. I'm not familiar with these transmissions as this is my first truck and I'm still learning as I'm going. My question is what would be the best transmission transfer case setup for this kind of build? Thanks in advance

5 speed nv4500 np241 transfer case

4 speed sm 465 np 205 transfer case.

those would be my pick, if I had a low budget 4 speed would be your best bet.

Is the 205 full time or is that the 203? I found a 465 on craigslist for 300 needs a clutch and all that with a 203 t case

203 is full time 4wd.

Depending on your gearing, an SM465 might not be too daily driver friendly since it doesn't have overdrive.

I want to stick some 38's under it. I was thinking 4.10 gears?

4.10s and 38 inch tire, you'll be OK with a SM465. It'll still rev pretty high on the interstate, but very doable since at 70, you'll be under 3000 rpm. The NV4500 has Overdrive, but you'll spend a pretty penny getting the correct bell housing and transcase adapter and transcase too since you'll need a round pattern Tcase.

I'd call that a bit on the tall side, but close enough. I'd go 4.56 or 4.88, screw the mileage because it won't get any anyway.

Yeah well, that's my point. He won't need OD with 38 inch tires.

I was told 42 and 44 tires to run 4.56 its not gonna get a lot of interstate time mainly two lanes and back roads. The longest it will see at 70 would be 45 min drive down to another city and that's about it.

Then cheap out and go for the easily found and much less work and get the SM465. Granny 4 speed.

If your planning on 38 inch tires then fuel mileage is out of the window now. Np 203 is fulltime with a chain, np205 is gears only. I think 4.88 would be too low of a gear on the street in my opinion. I would also recommend going with a hydraulic clutch setup also, but they arent cheap.

For 4x4, if you're twisting, flexing and articlating alot, for sure, go hydro clutch. And it's really not that expensive if you gather your parts from a Pull A Part type salvage yard.

Hydro clutch has less to wear out and is easier to work with in my opinion. It took me a while to find my complete setup, I got it for 150 shipped in.

85 and newer truck, burb or blazer. 1 tons are more likely to have it.
