found what’s listed as a “1974 CHEVY C20 CHEYENNE SUPER long bed CAMPER SPECIAL”

The engine may be a crate, may be original. Not sure about the th350 trans in a camper special. I’m not great with rpo codes, but I thought m40 was a th400. Also seems to be missing the compressor. Can anyone else point out major molestation?

I think I can get it for $2500 or less.

Thoughts?

This is a similar configuration to my 1975 K25 camper special. Mine has a 8200 GVW, which allowed leaded gas. The only emissions controls I have is the PCV valve and a vapor canister on the gas tank vent.

In that timeframe for my '75 K25, the M40 option was a TH350. Later on they also used M40 to designate the TH400. GM gets confusing sometimes.

The engine pictured is missing the A6 compressor, which was a real boat anchor and quite unreliable. I got brackets from Vintage to mount a Sanden in the same location. You would also need custom hoses, or a hose block adapter to make the Sanden work with original hoses.

Due to the high GVW this should have a 14 bolt FF. It has a G80 locking diff, which is both good and bad. They work fine in stock form, but when spun up quickly (burn outs, etc.) they may engage suddenly and break the locking mechanism.

Based on the wheels, this one probably has 16" wheels and tires instead of the original 16.5" tires. Its a direct swap, and 16's are much easier to find and work with. 245/75R16E is about the right size to match OEM. If you want to keep the GVW you need to look for load range E/10 ply load rating on the tires, not just standard light truck tires. There is a sticker inside the driver's door that has more GVW info, including the max weight for a load in the bed. I think mine says it handles a camper up to 2650 lbs.

You might also find some brackets bolted on the back of the cab and extending through holes in the front of the bed. These were installed sometimes to provide more support to a heavy camper.

M40 just denotes an automatic trans.

Is it actually a th350? Many times I've been told by a seller it's a th350, but then when I look under, it's a th400.

Looks pretty good to me. The hood has been replaced at some point. It has the later 70's version. It should have the one like I added to my '79.

I think the bumper guards have been added too. No RPO for them and I'm not even sure they were available that early.

I haven’t seen it in person. I was planning on looking whichever day I’m not hunting this weekend.

I’m having trouble seeing the difference. Are the ridges more pronounced on the earlier hoods?

It took me a minute but I noticed there is a horizontal body on the front of the hood and not on the one Craig posted.

Here's the front of my '79 right after I bought it with the correct hood. The ridge on the center of the hood stops sooner and transitions into a horizontal line that is about the width of the grill about 2" above the bottom of the hood. I would assume this was to help transition to the '81 style.

You bought this, rite?
No. My wife and I looked at it and didn’t get excited over it. So we passed. It’s going to be the wife’s truck. Now she’s dead set on a 55 pickup.
