i just picked up a 98 4x4 4l80 that needs rebuilt.

i am thinking about rebuilding it and swapping to the 2 wheel drive output shaft that i need to convert to my 205.

what upgades should i be looking for shift kit, updates or problem fixes? without spending a small fortune on it.

i just bought the full spline 2 wheel drive output shaft off ebay

is it as simple as swapping the tailshaft out or does anything else need changed out.

i have rebuilt manual trannies and transfer cases but have never rebuilt a auto.

what tools should i get i plan to get a rebuild book on it

i got my rebuild kit today so i started to tear down the internal parts

come to find out my overdrive sprag failed and destroyed the panet gear housing and my forward clutch hub.

so i am forced to replace it but lucky for me it is one of the updates i was wanting to do anyway. in 2001 the changed the sprag design for better durability. i bought a new set off ebay with all the parts needed for the 2001 up 4l80 to update mine

i have not been taking any pictures yet still collecting parts.

i have torn it down to inspect the parts and find out what needs replaced. and that is all i have done well i have spent a small fortune already on the rebuild parts.

this is a learning experiance for me so i don't want to complicate it to much with a write up but i will try to get a bunch of pictures and post them with a short descrition.

i posted some good videos on a rebuild and tear down i learned alot from them

i got my no walk rear bushing in the mail today and put it in the case.

waiting on my thrust washers to get hear to really kick off the rebuild

so should i soak the clutches and bands in tranny fluid or leave them dry?

i have heard people do it and people do not do it i figure it would help with the first start up

I've always done it. They don't have to soak overnight or anything like that, but it won't hurt them either. I usually just fill the trans pan about half full of fluid put my clutches in it and start my build. If I didn't have enough fluid to submerge them 100%, then I'll flip the stack of clutch and bands to make sure everything at least gets wet.

just finished drilling the holes in the valve body for the transgo hd2 kit

2 holes for a relief valve

and drilled the seporator plate for the shift firmness drilled it to .086 recomended for average hd truck

need to clean it off in the morning then put the rest of the transgo parts and new solenoids in it and finish rebuilding the valve body.

i got it all back together sorry no pics it was a handful learning how to get it done.

i will say that service manual was a huge help but it is out dated all the expoded diagrams are for the 91 to 96 tranny mine was a 98 so alot of things were different.

i used the manual and the videos i posted and this link for the 97 up stuff its a updated manual.
