So I finally got around to installing my long tube headers today. I removed the rest of the exhaust including muffler for now until i can find a place that can weld me on some mufflers. It runs fine (loud as hell) when i step on the gas, but as soon as i let off the throttle, it backfires like mad. It got so bad I had to put the truck in neutral when i got off the freeway, which seemed to eliminate the problem.

Is this because of the fact that im only running headers? It would backfire a bit while decelerating before but now its so much worse.

Unburned fuel meets hot surface where oxygen is hanging around and you get the cackle bombs. That's why no boom boom in neutral, not a bunch of unburnt fuel flowing at idle.

Be sure the exhaust is sealed good. Blowing up mufflers gets spendy, and nerve wracking.
