idles normally, but taking off too fast or climbing long inclines (worse from a dead stop). I have to feather the pedal to keep it from missing. first the motor stumbles then the misfire(s). My carb knowedge is probably a 4 out of 10. any input would help.

***Found vacuum line off distributer that was unserviceable. Replaced and no change in driving.

You need to do a carb overhaul and buy new floats. Make sure they are adjusted properly.

Check for spark plug wires touching metal. That will give the same symptom. If they short to ground( metal) it will cause a misfire.

Sent from the dust in front of you!

What carb do you have?
If it is a quadrajet you need to check the secondary air valves to see if they are opening too fast. Could be the primary air break is not working or tension spring is loose or broken.

I'm fighting the same situation with mine. Timed vac advance instead of full, longest throw on the accelerator pump arm, and some timing tweaking seems to be calming mine down but I'm beginning to wonder if I need a timing chain, seems my timing is all over the place. Have you put a vacuum gauge on it yet? That might help you figure out if the intake or carb gaskets might have a leak.

If by "longest throw" on the accelerator pump arm, you mean the hole in the end of the lever, that is actually the shortest "throw". The longest throw is on the inner hole.

You might know that. Just making sure, because I have seen people get that backward.

Yeah the one at the end of the rod is the shortest. I've fought mine ever since changing to vortec heads.
