Larger steel wheels

The transports are all 22" and I believe 8-9" wide. They come on the 'burbs/tahoes/escalades/denalis for transporting them to the dealers, then the real 22s/24s are put on. Not sure why. Lots of 60-66 and 67-72 guys run them. There's claims floating around on the web saying they're not fully welded and to be careful running them but idk if that's true. I know of a ton of guys running them with no problems.

I wonder what the purpose is? If they are just for transport, why aren't they just tall and skinny donuts? I won't claim that I watch every hauler that goes into a dealership, but I've never noticed them in use on a vehicle that's being transported.

Are you saying the transport wheels are more like donut spares? Why the heck would anyone want those?

I have seen pictures of trucks in the past with "transport" wheels and from what I remember, they look like the steely full sized spares. Not my cup of tea at all, so I am definitely foggy as to what they (the "transport" wheels) actually look like.

It really doesn't matter anyway, the OP has a C10 with 5-lug wheels. The 2wd 1/2 tons never got larger diameter wheels until the 6-lug years.

Not because they are dinky but because they weren’t outfitted with good tires. And basically only come in one size. Regardless, maybe not the right comparison but doesn’t matter as the OP likely has a 5 lug truck (or possibly 8, only clue he gave was the smaller dog dish cap). Have never seen them in anything other than 6 lug 22”, which he was also not asking about.
Great discussion but it’s a very limited application with basically only 1 size and lug option. Just trying to keep practicality in the conversation and provide solid advice to the new guy, which is to not send him down the rabbit hole of transport wheels which are questionable quality (speculation on my part) and certainly not the right answer at all for his truck.
And the ones that are for sale “if” they work for someone’s application seem to be about $300/ea shipped. For about 25% more $ you can get a proper bare wheel in virtually any size/offset/lug pattern.

Bout the same as my 20x9 Detroits. All show no go….
I don’t remember the exact numbers but the 35” Red letter grabbers I got to go with them were literally the heaviest light duty vehicle tire I’d ever picked up.
I ran the numbers compared to my Ram with 37” Toyos and whatever gay ass brodozer wheels it has and the 35” Generals/Detroit steelies out weighed them by like 10-15lbs.

I want to weigh the factory 8-lug 16” steel wheels now. They can’t be much more than 30lbs. They feel pretty light to me.
