Doing the intake gaskets and noticed the distributor cap. Do you replace the coil on top too? I'm assuming its wore out

I've had disintegrated ignition parts like this before. You have to replace the cap, of course, and there's an coil insulator and distributor bushing that sits under the coil/goes through the cap. If those are visibly damaged, you need to replace them. If you're getting a healthy white spark, your coil is doing its job. Here's a test, though.

If it was still able to run like that, the coil must still be plenty strong.

Yeah, you should need the cap and rotor only. I think the cap will come with the carbon plunger, spring, and insulator that goes between the coil and cap.

That's pretty standard on my rigs...always took it to mean I have a strong coil and bought a cheap cap. With higher rpms on a long trip, still haven't been able to prevent that from happening until I went to off cap coil for HEI.

I just grabbed a champion one from Canadian tire.
While I got you guys on here I'm kinda torn about the intake gaskets. I know to use rtv on the China wall but do I put the gaskets on dry? I've read too many conflicting things.
Thanks

If the coolant ports have any pitting at all, I smear a very very thin coating of RTV around them. I like to use nice embossed gaskets. Cheap flat gaskets should definitely get a dose of Indian Head.

I do not believe in blue rtv. I use Ultra Black on just about everything. Not to be confused with regular black.

I never heard if it be referenced as the China wall. Me likes. I used the Mahle head gasket set last time and it came with rubber gaskets for the china wall which I thought was pretty cool. I ran a thin bead of ultra black along the mating surface to ensure the gaskets didnt move. I also dabbed a little on the lower ears of the intake manifold port gaskets so they wouldnt move either. Seems to have worked.

Many people including myself like to skip the rubber end gaskets and run a 1/4 inch bead of rtv instead. The rubber gaskets can push out.
