Oh the pic at the beginning of this thread? I don't have that truck anymore... I've got roller tip rockers on this one... Suppose they are stamped too though right? I'll take a pic when I get the covers off in the morning

So it wasn't the rockers making the noise, I pulled the dipstick out and it looks like it was rubbing the crank... New stick, no more tap.

Check and make 100% sure you have the lower tube in your block. If you don't your dipstick will do the same thing again.

99% of rebuilt engines do not have this and most people don't even realize its missing.

Wouldn't that mean pulling the pan off? The tube would push up from the bottom if it was there? I don't see anything from the top side

Yes you have to pull the pan to see if the tube exists. If it doesn't then you need to install one otherwise the dipstick can slap against the crank all the time.

doesn't seem to be hitting, I'm gonna let it go for now... Thinking a pan gasket will be needed before summer is over so I'll check then

On our 38 Ford we are running a performer intake with a Holley 600 and the matching edelbrock cam. Runs and sounds awesome! Has block hugger headers with some cheap universal turbo style mufflers.
