I'm betting its a "tattletale" heat tab. They melt/dissolve if they get hot. It's a sure fire way to prove an engine has been hot. Back in my engine shop days we'd put something similar on every engine we'd rebuild. It only took one fight with a customer who'd obviously way overheated and cooked an engine and the ensuing fight for the owner of the engine shop to make the decision to install those little buggers on all rebuilds. However, it does also resemble a magnet and is a pretty good idea if that's the case given the location of return oil!

What were you trying to get out of it, any estimations before hand? Did you do a steady pull? Was 6,000 all you were going to run up to? How did you break it in before you started your pulls?

What rods did you use? What cc's were you pistons? We didn't get to see you rocker arms, I'm sure they're rollers. I have a set of 1.5 Lunadi's on my 350, I love roller rocker arms.

How did you know it was a Mark IV? I don't know that much about how to look at an engine and tell what it is. I'd be interested in knowing how you know what it is.

I like this idea. Impressive #'s for sure. If I was to do a BBC, a 496 is the one I wanted to do too. About as square bore x stroke as you can get.
