What did it make on the dyno?
Keep in mind the goal was not to make big HP, the goal was a smooth idle with a factory 350 HP 396 cam or 427 390 HP hyd cam with the factory intake and a Q-Jet. I like it a lot.

Where did you source the 427 crank? Is there any mods needed to install that crank into a 396 block?

Thanks

4.350 x 3.764, 9.7 compression, 1971 820 GM oval port heads, Comp cams roller tip rockers, .080 wall chromoly pushrods, factory 390 HP cast iron intake with a Q-Jet. The centerpiece of my build a 350 HP 396 factory hydraulic cam 214/218/460/480/112 with 1970s TRW hyd lifters. Some pictures.

I was confused until I re-read your first post. Somehow I thought you put a 427 crank into a 396 block and ended with 427 cu. engine. 396 camshaft.

Old people get confused easy.:suicide:

396 and 427 cranks are one and the same. The good ones were in early 396/427 blocks in 65/66/67. Also those early blocks could go either way, most were thick walled to take the bigger 427 bore. I have 2 of these blocks and neither have the dowel pins for the front camshaft gear cover, that's a good indicator for the "good" blocks. All of the "good" cranks a forged with a 6223 number. Can't remember the block numbers.........(old)

Ok........lets get the correct information out there. 396 and 427 cranks are not the same, although they use the same fordging number. The third counter weight on a 427 crank is thicker for the heavier pistons in the 427. Both 396 and 427 share the same stroke 3.766. The early 6223 crank is NOT the best 396/427 crank, the 6223 crank came with and without cross drilled mains, non cross drilled cranks were used in the lower HP 396 and 427 applications along cast cranks. The cross drilled 6223 cranks were used in SPECIAL HI PERFORMANCE applications. Now the BEST 427 crank is the 7415, used in the L88s and ZL1s, much harder to find than the 6223 crank.

For not looking to make all the power in the world, that engine is nothing to laugh at.
Over 500 ft/lbs from somewhere in the 2000's and 493 horsepower is damn fine for a "smooth idle" engine built with some old stock GM parts.

I am sure there is loads of knowledge that helps when putting the parts together that helps as well...

Nice work sir.
Damn nice.

I know who you are!!. seen you all over the internet. Nice to see you come on this board to advertise. You are the #1 big block builder for bringing every bit of power out of a big block
without breaking the bank. Your builds are incredible in my book.
