I used a retrofit roller in my SBC, but also added a Cloyes two piece timing cover with an adjustable button. Stock steel timing covers apparently are not stiff enough to keep the cam button from moving out and allowing play. Stock one piece timing cover is also a PIA to get off on an SBC because of how the seal fits with the oil pan.

I recently saw an article where they used a water pump that had an adjustable bracket on the back that braced the timing cover and stopped it from flexing. Not sure if it actually works well.

Used a Comp Cams retrofit roller with button. Trimmed the button a bit to fit correctly under the stock cover. Works fine.

Thanks all, yep, got that Cloys cover in my wish list at Summit. I will not try to use my stocker then. What a forum!

Fwiw, I'm running a Comp hydraulic roller with a cam button (included in the kit) under a billet aluminum cover. I don't remember having to do any mods to fit it but it's been about 8 years since I assembled it.
