How to remove spray paint from rims?

Bought an 87 K10. Previous owner spray painted the factory 6 lug rims black.

My question is, how do I safely remove the black spray paint without damaging the factory silver paint underneath?

I have seen some suggestions online saying to use gasoline, MEK, nail polisher remover, etc. but would like to see if any of you have done this before and what method you used.

If not too old wax and grease remover will not damage finish underneath. Another option would be a polishing compound. It comes in various grits. Can use that with W&G remover.
