How much hp can I get out of a 327? Depending on heads, crank, cam, carb, etc. I can get it for free if I want it. Can also get a worked 350 but it was used in an '86 Custom Deluxe plow truck then sat for years. Worried about rings, bearings, and such. Having a hard time deciding. Either will be going into my '86 C10 Silverado 305 .030 over, mild cam, and runs like a champ. Almost hate to swap it but like so many others like us wanting some more power is my issue. C10 is my daily. My only. 350 would have to go right in. The 327 can be sent out to get what she needs done. Looking for 400 hp and close to that in ft. lbs. of torque. Opinions please and thanks.

I don't care if it came out of a plow truck that sat 20 years and had rings so bad it burned a quart of oil every time you filled the gas tank, take the 350. Get that 305 out of your truck and put a real engine in! Seriously though, a 4.3 is better than a 305 in most ways. Just swap it with whatever you have available at your first opportunity (assuming it runs), you won't regret it

If the 305 runs well, why would it have to come out right away for the 350?

The 327 was used in just about anything until the 350 came along. Either can make 400 hp/tq with the right head, cam, etc.

Need a vehicle to drive. Clean swap for the 350, or hold onto 305 while 327 gets work

Tbh, no 80s 350 head will be capable of 400hp easily. Your probably looking at $800 minimum for heads that can flow enough, plus a cam and other associated items. It’s not a weekend job for most guys and at that point, you’d want to freshen it up internally.

I’d keep what you have since it’s a daily. Then save up for a used 350 from someone to build in your garage.

Regarding Frankenchey's reply, heard the 350 run last year and it sounds nasty. Never heard the 327. Both are in vehicles on my property. Like the 350, could even be a 355. Leaning that way. Thanks.

Thanks for your input and most valued info, but with the help of the gear heads I know, it shouldn't be a problem. Thanks for responding quickly.

Whatever engine you get, I would pull it apart, unless there are receipts showing the block number that matches and what all was done and a date. Still might not be enough. If it sounds "nasty" it just may be. Plow truck and sitting for years may not be a good thing, YMMV
