Hi,

can anyone tell me, whether this two parted hood liner in my 1979 GMC K25 (Californian Truck, Fremont Plant) is the factory installed original part? If yes, what are the chances, that it contains asbestos?

Thanks!

doubtful EPA clean air act of 1973 outlawed asbestos use for insulation and fire proofing, its likely GM quit using it then too. Even though the total ban didn't happen until 89.

It’s interesting to me that this was brought up because I had wondered the same thing myself, but I wrote it off as a probably not. Are there any other carcinogenic substances we come into contact with, particularly relating to fluids, new or used, brake parts, or solvents that anyone can think of?

I’d read about the motor oil. Yuck. I’ll start wearing gloves from now on.

I’d be willing to bet California banned the use of asbestos before the feds mandatated it.

Even here, asbestos was used in home materials into the 80s.

To the op. You’ll be okay. You have to disturb quite a bit of asbestos fibers to damage your lungs. It’s probably all over your house if it’s pre 1980.

The bulk of my work for property management companies involves environmental remediation, though usually mold related to leaks. There are labs you can send a sample to if it’s keeping you up at night. The test is under $40.

Asbestos was used in some underhood applications until 1989.

The only way to be certain is to, like Frankenchevy said, have it tested at a lab.
