I’m wondering if anybody has done a LSX 454 with a T-56 6spd swap in their ‘73-‘79 C30? I have a ‘79 C30 dually with a flatbed. It currently has the BBC 396 the truck was equipped from the factory with a 454 and the granny 4spd that gets maybe 3 gallons per mile. Lol. I’ve been playing with the ideas of either doing a Cummins swap with a 5 or 6 spd manual from late 90’s or an Allison auto trans…. or going with the LSX 454 w/ a T56 6spd and lower it to be a fun little daily driver. And change out the gears in the diff from a tractor gear to something more highway friendly.

Thanks for the replies and info!

Welcome from Pennsylvania. To be honest, that is a heavy truck to run as a daily and expect any kind of exceptional fuel mileage.

I like whoever swapped in the older 396 went to the trouble, to keep that rotary Frigidaire compressor. That will pump out some ice cold air if set up right..

I'd keep that truck for hauling and grab it a C10 short box brother. Add an LS small block to that for your best fuel economy in a full size square.

My plans are to make it fun, useable and more economical! I turn wrenches on bikes (mostly Harley’s). So, pulling heavy loads or using it commercially or even as a farm truck are not in my plans. Pulling a travel trailer (a toy hauler, 25’ to 30’ long or less) would be the most it would pull. Thanks for the reply man! As far as that AC unit, I definitely plan on getting it running the best it can! Luckily I’m pretty decent at AC work!
