Hi community
I am curious if there were experiences in exhaust sound for the following idea.
I currently have a y pipe installed, with one pipe. All stock. I want to keep that look.
I also want a deeper v8 sound.
Would i achieve an improvement just changing the one muffler to lets say flowmaster 40 and similar?
Yes, i know a dual exhaust with x or h would do best. But that wont be my way. I am sure thr sound would change, any one ever done that?
Thanks
Tim

Flowmaster are known for bad drone, I had different ones on a 1 pipe setup. Removed them all.
I run a 2 in 1 2.5" in 3" stainless exhaust with a big custom ( muffler shop ) wrapped perforated tube muffler.
As you are in Germany I guess noise level is an issue as it is in Austria. Magnaflows sound good, turbo style muffler sound different, walker has some nice sounding mufflers too. A bigger pipe form the muffler to the exit helps a little for a deeper tone. You can pm me, we can write in german if you want to.

Duals with or without an xpipe, pipe will not be a performance advantage on a low hp application. A properly sized single exhaust will actually be better. As for sound that's a personal preference deal, watch this video, kind of surprising but it sure shows the difference between turbo mufflers and flowmasters

I heard a Dodge pickup with a single Thrush welded muffler and thought it sounded great so I bought a pair for my truck. A single exhaust can sound good sometimes.

Performance is not my target. That would need more bucks than my wife would ever allow

wrapped perforated tube muffler.
This is interesting. I have one in the shop but haven't tried it yet. Very large 3 in 3 out glass pack.

Years ago I had a 3" in 3" out International Harvester muffler on my pickup. Nice sound with a lower tone.

Dynomax makes a straight thru oval (Ultra flow) bult like a glass pack, perforated tube wrapped in packing. Supposedly a deeper tone than their race bullets. I'm running a set of the 3" versions off a set of fender well headers. Just finished getting them mounted not sure what they sound like yet as I dropped the saddle tanks to make room for the exhaust and put a fuel cell in the bed and haven't gotten fuel in it yet. I'll post a video of it running tomorrow after work.

John, man that thing looks serious. I actually though magnaflows would be more dark toned and covered. A lot bass, not that many highs. But that video makes me think again.

xm20k, thanks for the impression, too.

I watched a bazillion videos comparing all the different equipment one can buy. In the end, it is impossible based on a video guesstimate how loud it really will is and feels like. I think 40 and 44 will be too much. I like the raw tone, the flowmasters have a metallic, hollow resonance with bright, high-pitched overtones. It produces a tinny, almost echoing sound with sharp, ringing peaks that give it a raw, aggressive edge. but, too many db.
maybe 50 delta flow...At least as per flowmaster info pages, that is way milder than 40 and similar ones.

and will look into thrush turbo. I want to have that roadrunner (is that what it is?) as a badge on the car :) :)

@elbpony thanks!

Bigger pipe will help the sound too. I’ve always thought the smaller 2.25” or 2.5” can have more of a pop in the tone where bigger 3” makes it sound a little deeper.

I had a Y-pipe and single muffler on my '79 C10 with no tailpipe. Exhaust ended about a foot passed the cab. Sounded great. I used to get a lot of compliments on the sound.
