First post. I have spent hours on here and the net researching this.
I am swapping my 10 bolt to a 14 bolt. Here's what I know, and would like others to verify before I buy an axle.

My truck is a 1981 K 10 4 X 4

Found a GM 14 bolt 4:10 gears Code GT5 that came off a 3/4 ton (2500). It has the 6 lug bolt pattern. I understand that spring perches and shock mounts need to be relocated. New ujiont as well.

This axle I am looking at is 67 1/2 inches WMS to WMS.

Lots of information out there about axle length for this application. This axle was on a 2 X 4 (2500) . I had him measure WMS to WMS = 67.5

I THINK,, this is my correct axle ! AGREE ?? Please chime in. Love this site !!

Everyone including myself seems to go with the 4x4 version of the axle, as it puts the rear track width close to matching the front. These trucks were built with a narrower rear track, probably because of cost reasons only (same housing as 2wd) and if replacing the rear housing, it makes sense to also improve the looks by matching the track width front/rear.

IIRC, the 2wd version is a little narrower than the original 10 bolt axle. Other than looks, it should still work.
