Fuel gauge not working ? New sending units

Hey guys last Eltricical problem I swear not ! Ok I swapped a cummins in a TBI 87 crew cab . But I took 86 sending units from a 6.2 diesel . I connected the purple wire to the side of the sending unit and didn't connect the other side of the sending unit to anything so was that a mistake ? And I grounded the sending unit to the frame and the gauge worked before the swap any help would be nice thanks

purple wire shopuld be grounded to the frame and the pink wire should be attached to the sending unit.

Im having the same issue with my 82. Turn the key on and the fuel guage pegs past full.

My 86 did that and it was a bad ground on one of the sending units.

mines pegged past full all the time, whether the key is on or not, still think a ground? how do you test the gauge? I messed with the ground and nothing seemed to happen, I'm wondering if its a lack of ground to the frame from the battery.
