Both times I've had a windshield done in my '85, they didn't pull the A-pillar moldings out. Nor the dash. The last time the did it, earlier this year, they were done and gone in less than 30min
By a popular chain?

No, a local guy. Small company, dad and son operated. They have several old trucks and know the tricks of most of the old vehicles, they're a dying breed around here
Indeed, from what I know it can be a PITA, so 30 mins is spectacular!

Yep. After my 2 DIY experiences, I'll gladly pay someone.

I have the dash out. Think I need to remove pillar and top trim moldings for more room to work. This really hurts yours hands and fingers.
Agreed.
I’ve seen it done without (online) but installed mine when the cab was gutted and I believe it helped or at least I did some stuff from the inside what wouldn’t have been able to reach with dash and moldings in.
It’s a challenge for sure.

What i like about all the online videos I have seen is they barely get started in the seal and then say well we'll be back in a minute to put the glass in and never show installing the seal.

Any tricks to getting the new seal installed on the pinch weld? Arthur has been no help at all. Cannot get it to go in at the corners for nuthin
When I have problems with windshield seal certain areas, I have a small straight screwdriver I bent 90* about an inch from the end then sanded all the sharp edges off. I can reach in with the handle get the flat tip in the groove and pull the rubber lip where I need it.

Got that biotch in this morning in a little over an hour.
Tricks:
1) come back the next day.
2) use a head light to be able to see better
3) tie wraps and tape working your way up.

I had a glass company to come right to my house, they were done in about 40 minutes, he took out the old windshield and seal and replaced them both and it turned out pretty good for $300!

I am getting close to the time for the front and rear glass installation. I will have a pro do it. I have done windshield many times over the years, rubber gasket, butyl and urethane types. I hate doing it and it takes me 10 times longer than a guy who is good at it.

Ask around before you hire someone. They stopped this style of windshield installation before most of the guys in the business were born. You need to find a shop that does a lot of old cars. Car clubs, restoration shops, car shows are good places to get a referral.

Fwiw, the rear is 1000x easier than the front but you still need the lock strip tool.
