I would highly suggest getting a shroud. And yeah, exhaust needs a better tone. Besides the tone, it sounds healthy

Yeah, it really needs one. I hurt my hand on it yesterday. It needs a bigger radiator. I’m told that this one is for the straight six or whatever. I’ll be upgrading things like this over the winter. I also want to get a better set of wheels and lower the truck just a little bit.

Today I’m going to fill up the Three speed with oil, put some cotter pins in the shift levers, And put the driveshaft in. Then I’ll see if it will move. Remember, I did the disassembly and reassembly of the transmission so I’m hoping I put it all together right.

Any idea what timing I should be at with the vacuum advance hooked up? I think right now I’m about 33°.

Remember, 90w mineral oil in the transmission.

Luckily shrouds are still available. Makes a huge difference. A 3 row radiator should do the trick.

8 to 12 btdc with vacuum advance disconnected, but the 283 may be finicky. I personally haven't dealt with a 283 since high school and knew nothing back then, just ran the piss out of it. 4000 rpms all day with that little engine

Yeah I set it to base 12 yesterday. Will fool with it more once I change the oil. Should I keep the same zinc oil I used for break in? Or just go to Mobil 1 or something

Keep the zinc oil. I use valvoline conventional, but I haven't checked recently, heard it has lower zinc levels now. If you run a synthetic, I'd recommend adding the zinc.

Got the gas pedal linkage in with a new return spring. Got the clutch linkage hooked up with a new nut on the end of the rod. Bought some brass fender bushings from ace to use on the shift linkages at the trans where the old ones are non existent. Then, couldn’t get the transmission to shift to neutral. Took the side cover off my 3 speed trans and discovered I didn’t put the gears back together correctly so the trans has to come back out. Another weekend project. Always something

Bought some new engine oil, the same ZR one zinc stuff or whatever it was called. Coolant, transmission oil etc

Never mind went ahead and pulled the trans. Looks like I put it together wrong. Supposed to put the tail shaft in first and that locks, then the input. Might take it apart tomorrow

Timing set it at full advance with the vacuum advance disconnected. Let the advance at idle fall where it falls SBC typical total advance would be 36*. So use a timing tape or dial back timing light rev it until it stops advancing and lock it in at 36*,hook vacuum advance back up . A little more time and trouble you can dial it in better. But that's going to be start at 30* total and check trap time in a measured distance, bump timing 2* at a time until it peaks, then drops,go back to lowest setting with highest mph. That's what the engine wants. MPH not ET

Today I tried to get a transmission shop to do a complete rebuild on the transmission because it has a lot of seal leaks. Out of the seven Transmission shops I called only one would do standard transmissions, but he was out for a while so I decided to fix it myself.

I put it all back together and thought I had it right yet again, put it in the truck, hooked everything up, driveshaft the whole deal, truck wouldn’t move. Actually, it would move, it wanted to lurch forward because it was stuck in gear. Pulled the transmission out again, busted it all back down, watched a video on YouTube, got it all back together correctly. Put it back in the truck, filled it back up, got some brass bushings from Ace for the shift levers to tighten it up. Driveshaft back in, cranked the truck, nothing.

Turns out something was wrong with the column. It was stuck or something, and I finally got it loose. Put it in reverse, drove around the block all the way through third.

This truck is really not fun to drive at low speeds with the clutch and the three on the tree. The exhaust is now obnoxiously loud and just an ugly sound if I’m being honest. I think it has big exhaust leaks at the header collectors, even though I put new gaskets in.

The truck is going to need a whole lot to make it comfortable to drive. Complete interior, really complete suspension, new headers, and exhaust, bigger tubing, and better mufflers. But, it’s back on the road. Tomorrow I still need to change the oil from the break-in., And drain the radiator and put antifreeze in it.

Drove it down the road and back, man, that three on the tree really sucks to drive. Pain to work the clutch and gas and all that. And I think I may have hurt my driving RPMs by installing that thumper cam. At 62 miles an hour it was screaming, if I pushed it to 65 it felt like it would explode.

I messed with the timing a little bit in the idle. Got it running pretty good. It does have a little bit of a vacuum leak at the base of the carburetor. Need to source a new gasket for the adapter plate. No oil leaks.

Hopefully going to drop it off at the local reputable exhaust shop this afternoon. Said they have all types of mufflers in stock. It’s got 2 inch pipe with some sort of bullets or glass packs right now. Would like to kind of go up to 2 1/2 and some more mellow mufflers. Definitely no damn flow master 40 series.
