Well I am a manual transmission enthusiast, and this is my first 3 speed on the column. I can live with it, but its definitely something I'd like to upgrade eventually.

There are some vehicles I would not accept an automatic in (and have refused them in the past based solely on that fact), but I think I'd be fine with a 300 6 + o/d automatic.
Not with mine. It’s a very unsure, malaise feeling, does the job. But it feels like it’s not all there somehow. Like it’s unsure of itself. My z4t65e before it decided shifting was optional, it was crsip. My old c6, crisp. Infact, it was a little too crisp in 2-3 on light throttle

my Saturn 5 speed felt like it knew what it wanted. My sm465 is a little loose goosy but that can be fixed. My Electra before it started on fire th350 was ok

Well perhaps the unit itself is tired. Maybe look at what else would bolt up to it. Perhaps you could get a heavier duty version (remanufactured?) transmission for your truck. I have never attempted such, just a route I'd investigate if it were mine.

I have had good results with changing fluid and filter on older Ford automatics. But many will warn you against that. It was my risk to take, but as I said, it's been an improvement in the vehicles I've done it on.

Unlikely at mostly highway 120k I do know the trans has the wrong fluid in it. But it has since day 2 I was gonna do a pan and filter and check out the electrical connector to make sure it’s good

SM420 or SM465 and a Ranger gear splitter overdrive, twin-stick that truck!
What would be an advantage of using an sm420 other than its park brake llol can it even fit properly
Also who you speaking to

I own one lol. I own a couple sm465 too

Exactly. Every time I do find one, it's gone pretty fast. I might end up with a NV3500, but meh...

There are 3 speed manuals that had an OD on them (like @DoubleDingo 's Crusty Biscuit) that used the column shift. They were an option in the 60's pickups. They have an electric solenoid that is activated by a speed governor I believe that shifts them into OD once you hit a certain speed. The better ones were the Saginaw 3 speeds since they have a synchronized 1st gear, but the earlier Muncie 3 speed OD's are easier to find and they still are a decent option if you want a manual OD and like the nostalgia of a column shift. If you were closer, I have one I would sell you. ;)

Yeah, the Borg Warner overdrive. 30% reduction. Swaps right in, no modifications to the driveshaft. Can be operated by a switch on the dash if you want to. Recommend 4.57 gears, though, that 30% drop makes the final drive ratio 3.19. 4.10 gears are 2.87 final drive in od.

It would need the high hump. Not all SM420s have the brake.

Wow, that is very interesting, never heard of those before.

I know it was not uncommon for Toyota to use 4 and 5 speed column shift setups for commercial-focused products like trucks and taxis, I'm sure that gets confusing!

Honestly, I'd be happier with a floor shifter, but I can live with the column shift.

Here is an example of one. I believe this one is an earlier Muncie version. The Saginaw ones had 7 bolt side covers I believe.

What do you think of a Saginaw 4 speed car transmission for my needs? I'm not using the truck for heavy hauling, but I do use it as a truck at times.

Besides, if I were to need it to haul/tow more at some point, I could find a granny low 4spd truck transmission later on, I suppose.

Would the 4spd from, say, a '73, use a cable clutch as well? I found one, below. I'm not ready to do a conversion yet (I need to get the parts I just ordered installed first, at the very least), but the idea of a more friendly driving experience to go with my new-found power (hopefully with the intake/carb upgrade) is interesting.

Found this one:

Cast case Saginaw 4 spds are usually fairly reasonable around here.$300-500 or less. These should just bolt in the original bellhousing without any changes. Driveline may even work, just find a shifter and you are in business??

A 4 speed would be just fine. Probably would be a direct swap as well. There is a member on here that installed a Jeep 5 speed in his 250-powered Square. I think @DBarre is his screen name on here. It seemed like a fairly straightforward swap, just needed a couple items to pull it off. Like the carb setups on the L6's, there are also a few overdrive transmissions one can use.

Edit: It was still an AX15, but out of a Dakota
