Does my engine have a chance of living?

I agree this build up can be common on old engines. I have seen even worse on older motors, I second cleaning it up the best you can. I had a 4.3l (so basically two cylinders chopped off) which was 3x worse than that. Cleaned it up at 130k and drove it 30k more before I sold it.

I am going to get the melling normal flow oil pump and a new pickup tube. Do I need anything else? I don't need a bushing or anything for the new pump and tube do I? I've seen where people say to tack weld them I'm place so the pickup won't fall out. I have a flux core wire welder, but can I weld the tube to cast iron with this welder?

Also, how difficult is it to drop the pan and replace on this engine? I'm dreading it because it seems like such a difficult task to do under this truck.
You tack weld with the flux core o problem. Make sure your polarity is reversed for flux core, pr you have major splatter.
On small block trucks it is usually easier to drop the pan. Big block 2 wheel drive have to remove the motor mount bolts and jack up the engine a bit.
There is some fighting involved with the auto tran oil coolant lines which clip to the pan bolts. Sometimes easiest to pull the lines off, together. If you do, be generous with brake cleaner and toothbrush (your wife's when she's not around) cleaning around the where the lines compression fittings are. This is usually a good place for goop and muck to try get in the tranny.

My last truck had a lot of sludge in it when I bought it. It developed a lifter tick at cold starts when the temp was below 60 degrees. I ran 1 quart of Marvelous Mystery Oil for 2 oil changes and the tick went away.

I would maybe run the Chevy 2 -Qt oil filter for a couple of rounds to pick up more gunk.

Rockauto is a good place to get the wix ones. Just shy of $9 each as opposed to the $18 the local auto parts stores want.
If you do need to tell them what its for, 1981 Chevy C60 C6D042 with a 366 gas engine
Damn I'm learning some stuff today. I've never heard of a 366! Just watched a Road Kill Extra episode where Freiburger gives the details. Crazy.

High volume, yes. High pressure, no.

TIP: Tack weld the pick up tube to the pump and the screen to the pick up tube.

Damn I'm learning some stuff today. I've never heard of a 366! Just watched a Road Kill Extra episode where Freiburger gives the details. Crazy.
366’s came in a lot of the squarebody grain trucks and things of that nature, I’ve tore down quite a few of em, they’re definitely different animals. They’re also gutless pigs lol

Ok, I have heard this before and have a question. If you swap in a high volume pump, since the internal resistance stays the same (bearings, etc), won't you naturally have higher pressure? Therefore higher volume pump equals higher pressure pump in a given engine.

Yeah that question will start arguments. IMO ..NO pressure increase. Just fills up the valve covers and lifer valley quicker. Also makes the crank virtually heavier... with oil.
Slightly less mpg... I said slightly but I don't know I'm guessing. The pump will be harder to spin. I said that already. Do I get paid twice?

No, you can move more volume without it being under higher pressure. If you have a garden hose and straw and both have oil coming out of them at the same pressure, the hose will still be able to put out more volume.

My old engine had 300k miles on it, but I didn't have the money for a crate engine. I cleaned all the gunk, did 2 cycles with oil system cleaner and flushed the cooling system. New oil pump (stock), new water pump, some new gaskets and hoses and it was to go for nearly 3 more years.
