This unit was removed from a '79 K20, someone has obviously been into it before, because the mounting bracket was bolted up wrong. Due to sitting out the elements for some time, the center shaft that drives the speedo cable was locked up. I opened it up to see what was wrong, it turns out that the shaft bushing was simply stuck. I got that freed up without much trouble, but the center of the shaft, where the square end of the speedo cable is inserted, seems to be badly rusted/corroded. Is there a source for these parts anymore? I haven't turned up anything yet.

I can't help you with individual repair parts but their is still remans out there for the assembly. Part number is Cardone 36-101 for the 2 wire and 36-102 for the 3 wire. I've been using a reman for over a year now with no problems.

I didn't realize that they were something that could be bought as reman unit.

Honestly, the only reason I want to fix this one is because I have it already and figured it would make a good spare. It's more of an experiment really, because I've never messed with them before.

The center could be soda (baking) blasted clean.

You don't find a lot of them around and, at commercial rebuild prices a good DIY rebuild is a bargain.

I was looking thru my parts stash for something else and found this piece I forgot I had and remembered this thread. Where the speedo cable threads on is a little dinged up, but other than that it looks good. It spins freely.
You can have the whole thing if you cover postage.
