So I was driving down to my parents house yesterday, running about 70 when my truck starts making an otherworldly clatter. Scared me to death. Anyway after a minute I figured out it was the clutch pedal. I pushed it down about an inch and it stopped. Got down to my parents house after dark and in the rain so I didn’t look at it, but sitting in the driveway I did some investigation. It does the noise regardless of transmission or transfer case position. In neutral or in gear, if I pull the pedal all the way out it does it. Push it in a hair and it gets worse, almost feels like something is hitting the linkage while the motor turns. Clack clack clack that you can feel in the pedal. Push it down a little more and it goeas away. Any ideas before we pull the trans? Truck is a 78, 350, sm465, np205. Thanks guys. New clutch and flywheel about 1k miles ago.

There is a thin plastic bushing that inserts into the pivot point of the pedal assembly. Yours probably needs to be replaced. Give me a minute, I'll see if I can't did through my new parts pile and get a pick.

So does the noise seem to come from the clutch pedal itself, or it's just that you can change the noise by using the pedal?

Seems to come from the pedal itself I think. We looked at it some more this morning. Under the hood, you can see the linkage pulsating along with the noise. Push the pedal to make it stop, the linkage stops moving. My dad drove it, he doesn’t think it’s a throw out bearing or anything. It drives and shifts just as well as it did before.

Loooked a little more tonight. Looks like the noise is coming from the linkage. The rod that goes through the floor board is what seems to be moving the most. It looks like it’s tapping the pedal right at the connection point. Maybe a bushing is supposed to be there?

Thanks. So this is for the pivot point of the pedal, right? Not where the linkage connects to the pedal?

After driving it a bit more, I’m hearing evidence of the throwout bearing going bad. So I’ll fix that and see where I am. I’m also planning on putting new transmission mounts on the crossmember as well.

Just finished up the throwout bearing and transmission mounts. The bearing was shot. We also found out that one of the linkage springs had broken. Fixed that, and the pedal chatter seems to be gone. Sometimes it’s the simplest things.

Pilot bearing? I have to admit I've never heard anyone describe replacing a throwout bearing a simple thing! Good luck man.
