We need more info than that! What engine (yes, your profile says 305, but is this the truck you are talking about?), what mods were already done to it, carb or TBI, What other mods have already been done, what mods do you have planned...?

And what are you trying to accomplish? Do you tow anything with it? Is this for street use? Cruising? Daily driver? Some track use? Rock crawling? What do you want, more grunt, more top end, better mileage?

Give us *something* to go on here!

Great thread!

All I really wanna know is if $25 will really make or break the build...

That seems more important, ey Rich? :nutkick:

Well headers are really my only plan but if I get the Xtreme power I have to get pushrods and rollers. the only mod is a Magnaflow XL 4x9 oval. 305,carb,little towing and hauling wood truck, daily driver, and litte better milage if possible. that's about it.

Here is the Hydrualic flat tappet Which is all I can find and afford,

Common Usage: Mild street performance to mild race
Key Benefits: Minimal maintenance, little or no valve train noise and economical cost
Limitations: Long-term wear, limited rpm range, lobe profile limitations
Select a camshaft for your application?

And here is the High Energy™

High Energy™
Benefits:
• Work well with mainly stock components (rockers, manifolds, heads, compression, converters, gears…)
• Good blend of efficiency and performance
• Perfect choice for performance rebuilds
Important Considerations:
• Not the optimum choice for racing applications
• Great choice for engines where performance upgrades are not planned

And here is the Xtreme Energy™

Xtreme Energy™

Benefits:
• Quicker opening lobe profiles deliver increased responsiveness & more area under the lift curve
• More vacuum allows a step up in duration for greater performance
• Best seller; excellent all around performance in street carbureted applications
Important Considerations:
• Work best with COMP Cams® roller rockers and matched valve springs
• Require other performance parts (intake manifold, headers, etc.) for best performance

So what will be the best bang for my buck least money and simplest labor.
Thank you for your replies.

I used to run a Crane Compucam 2030 (i think? 2040?) 2030 I think - in my L69 and it was the pwwwnnnnnn! I smoked so many fools with that 305!!!

Omg so many....it was really bad ass.

And the one day I spun main bearings runnin low on dirty oil in front of a Corvette and built a 350.
Lookin back , I really wish I would have hung on to that 1987 L69. Those are GREAT motors!

SO....if you find the specs on that cam, I vote for something close to that.
I had my heads milled off the bottom and "pocket ported" with a 3 angle.

It made a lot of power twenty years ago FOR WHAT IT WAS (and how much I actually had in it.) Running the stock L69 intake and 1-5 8 headers with 2.25 pipes and? Dynomax super turbos, 3.73s and a 28 inch tire with 2200 HOLESHOT convertor. Q-jet , they used to make an oil pump blocker that kept oil off the back of the crank, kinda like a scraper but it wasn't? I ran one for a long time...

Dude. I didn't even have chrome valve covers...
I tried to buy another one to toss in the K5!

Does your have "601" heads on it? What year is the block? Casting number pliz!

The 2030 is a freaking fantastic 305 cam, IMO.

GIT. R. DUN. !

Those aren't the right cams for your truck. Those are wind-em-up cams. No torque in the bottom. The torque peaks at 340 lbft at 4000 rpm, about 150 ftlb at 1000 rpm. Yeah, you get 320 hp, once you wind it up, but off the light it will be a slug.

They'll sound bitchin' at idle, because they got nothing in the bottom, so they'll be missing and rough and sound mean and tough. But no stones off the light. See those RPM ranges? That means you'll have to replace the torque converter as well to get them up to rpm before the TC grabs.

For a truck, you want grunt in the bottom to get that thing moving.

If you put the 12-235-2 in it, you'll get 292 hp at 4500, but you'll also get 365 ftlb at 2500 rpm, about 280 ftlb at 1000 rpm. About double in the bottom. Now that's some stones out of the hole. One note: it will idle really nice with this cam, because it will LOVE to run at low rpm. Smooth and sweet. The crappy idle in a race engine is because it HATES low rpm, and they wind 'em way up before they launch.

Oh, and the 12-235-2 will give you lots better gas mileage than the other three. Basically, being tuned for higher rpm means the period when the intake and exhaust valves are both open is longer in degrees to get the time in msecs right. At low rpm, the gas just flows through there and out the back. The 12-235-2 is tuned for lot more torque in the bottom, and will not waste all that gas. BTDT.

I chuckled pretty good for a long while after reading "wind em up cams".
Wasn't expecting that.

Yeah, did I mention I ran the 2030 in a strippo 2700 lb true street/strip car with 3.73s?

Lol.
I just observed - age :14.

I'm jealous.
We're on your team @Iowan. Git.R.Dunn!!!

'601" refers to the last three digits of the casting number on the cylinder head, which is found underneath the valve cover.

Well I figured that it would make it a fun teenager car,but I don't want to go fast and drag race. maybe I'm wrong but usually I'm right unless I'm wrong than obviously I'm not right. and what do you mean I just observed - age :14?
