Brass Valve Stem

It's time to put a decent set of sneakers on the truck, and I'm refurbishing the original steel wheels.

These had brass valve stems with an expanding rubber grommet.

There are two different versions of these on the truck. One is rollmarked (*= five-pointed star)
* Schraeder CAN * and TR501 on it and the other has the same TR501, with the letter B in a diamond logo, but without the Schraeder brand.

I've tried the usual innerneck searches and haven't had any significant results. Does anybody have any experience here, or sources for replacements or components?

If the stems are in good condition any good tire shop should have replacement rubber seals and valves. A little time with a scotch brite pad should give them a nice brushed finish or you could tops them in a vibrating polisher with walnut hulls (like they use for rifle brass) and they will come out sparkling

In my defense, I did the googling a few years ago when I did the spare tire. I didn't get such good results at that time.

I didn't know you could get that type in brass. All of them I've run are a nickel type finish of some kind.

Can your google-fu find them in a low gloss black finish, like what GM used on some performance car wheels in the 80's? I've had no luck for years.

Only ever seen the bolt on ones in raw brass or chrome.

Even the universal ones like this are mostly chrome.

I typically use those ones in the Allstar listing. The same ones are marketed under many different brands. Just can't find black ones.

If they are brass he shouldn't need to work too hard on them. Soak in vinegar or a tabasco.

In case anyone cares, I ended up ordering a ten-pack of valves from Amazon. They appeared to be the same as the Summit ones and it was cheaper to get ten with free shipping than it was to get five and pay for shipping from Summit.

Install torque was quoted as 35 - 55 lb/in. I usually aim for the middle of the spec. But It felt more than solid at 35, and 45 seemed a little too much, so I left it at 35.

The tire shop didn't want to bang weights on the pretty rims so they did a bag job balancing. I'll let everyone know how that works out.

I've said it before, but I'll repeat it again.

When we bought the truck I was constantly looking to customize stuff because stock was ordinary when they were everywhere. But the more time went on, the more I came to appreciate what GM had wrought.

Another important point is that those appear to be high pressure valve stems, which would be correct for a K20HD. Standard valve stems are rated for a lower max tire pressure (maybe 60 psi?), but a high pressure valve stem will handle the 80 psi max of an E rated (or 10 ply) truck tire.

Not a big deal to have the right tire load rating and valve stems if you never plan to load the truck to near max, but very important if you have a camper or other heavy load. I have been surprised when tire shops just give me a dumb look when I ask if they are going to use high pressure valve stems with my 245/75R16E tires.
